Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) and Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) jointly organized a seminar on e-Commerce Payments and Logistics Sponsored by Mastercard, SSL Wireless and Technohaven in the city on July 13. The seminar mainly highlighted the most common hindrances in the way of e-Commerce growth, investment opportunities in e-commerce ecosystem and recommendations for relevant policy makers. In Bangladesh, 22 percent of 66 million Internet users are engaged in online shopping. The e-commerce market in Bangladesh is expected to get a big boost in the near future with double-digit growth per month. However, growth of this nascent industry is adversely affected due to the lack of appropriate e-payment and logistics framework in the country.
Zunaid Ahmed Palak, state minister, ICT Division, was the special guest of the seminar. SM Moniruzzaman, deputy governor, Bangladesh Bank was present as the guest of honor. Mustafa Jabbar, president, BASIS and Golam Mainuddin, vice-president, MCCI were present in the seminar. Habibullah N Karim, former president of BASIS and managing director of Technohaven Company Ltd., gave the welcome speech while Mostafizur Rahman Sohel, director of BASIS and Rubaiyat Ja mil, committee member of MCCI moderated the seminar in two different sessions. Abul Kashem Md. Shirin, managing director and CEO of Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited and Fahim Mashroor, former president of BASIS and founder and CEO of Ajkerdeal.com, presented keynotes in e-Payments and e-Logistics sessions, respectively. Besides, Sitangshu Shekhar Biswas, director (operation) of BRTA, Munir Chowdhury, director general of WTO Cell, Lila Rashid, general manager, Payment Systems Department of Bangladesh Bank, Syed Mohammad Kamal, country manager of Mastercard Bangladesh, Syeda Kamrun Ahmed, chairperson of BASIS Standing Committee and cofounder and partner of Bagdoom.com, Ashish Chakraborty, COO of SSL Wireless, Masud Mallik, COO of Biddyut Limited and Md. Abdul Wahed Tomal, general secretary of e-CAB participated in two different sessions as discussants and M Rashidul Hasan, vice president of BASIS concluded the seminar.
